About the Course

Thanks to a growing number of software programs, it seems as if anyone can make a webpage. But what if you actually want to understand how the page was created? There are great textbooks and online resources for learning web design, but most of those resources require some background knowledge. This course is designed to help the novice who wants to gain confidence and knowledge. We will explore the theory (what actually happens when you click on a link on a webpage?), the practical (what do I need to know to make my own page?), and the overlooked (I have the code, but how do I put it on the web to share with others?). Throughout the course there will be a strong emphasis on adhering to syntactic standards for validation and semantic standards to promote wide accessibility for users with disabilities. This course will appeal to a wide variety of people, but specifically those who would like a step-by-step description of the basics. There are no prerequisites for this course and it is assumed that students have no prior programming skills or IT experience. The course will culminate in a small final project that will require the completion of a very simple page with links and images. The focus of this course is on the basics, not appearance. You can see a sample final HTML page at https://example-site-1--wd4ehtml.repl.co/ . This is the first course in the Web Design For Everybody specialization. Subsequent courses focus on the marketable skills of styling the page with CSS3, adding interactivity with JavaScript and enhancing the styling with responsive design....

Excellent. Colleen was so great and explained everything in a way that was really easy to understand. I loved it so much I completed the three week course in 11 days. I'd recommend this course to anyone who knows nothing at all about coding and wants to start.

Honestly the best course on Coursera I've ever had. Thank you for inspiring me to code every day. It gave a push to make every single day into the interesting one. I hope the rest of the courses of this specialization will be adorable as much as this course.

Dr Colleen Van Lent is an eye opener! I first did CSS3 before coming to HTML5. I did HTML5 because I felt like there are somethings I did not quite know right about html. so taking the course opened my eyes to a WHOLE lot i never knew about. Thank you Colleen

Good intro to HTML.

One problem is that quizzes lock after the course ends. Obviously, changing results after the end of the course is undesirable, but the ability to look through tests at at later date would be nice. I think this is a Coursera problem though.

This class is the perfect way to get familiar with HTML. I was completely inexperienced. After just the first two weeks, I feel like I have some understanding of code and how it works. If you are just starting out with code, this class is the way to begin!

this course is very beautifully designed for the beginners who opt to seek knowledge about the web development but i suggest that the final project should be more technical than the present one in which student can think critically and apply his skills to it

This course is beginners-friendly. I had no problem understanding the lectures overall even if I have zero background knowledge on this field. Tests that comes after the lecturers were helpful but would be better if explanations for each answer are provided.

Everything is explained concisely and clearly. Quizzes are relatively challenging and they help to make sure you've learned everything properly. As a beginner I found this course very helpful for teaching me code and giving me good habits for when I do.
