About the Course

In this first course of this specialization, you will discover what data visualization is, and how we can use it to better see and understand data. Using Tableau, we’ll examine the fundamental concepts of data visualization and explore the Tableau interface, identifying and applying the various tools Tableau has to offer. By the end of the course you will be able to prepare and import data into Tableau and explain the relationship between data analytics and data visualization. This course is designed for the learner who has never used Tableau before, or who may need a refresher or want to explore Tableau in more depth. No prior technical or analytical background is required. The course will guide you through the steps necessary to create your first visualization from the beginning based on data context, setting the stage for you to advance to the next course in the Specialization....

Am glad I learnt a lot from this module, which I know will sharpen my skills for my chosen career path as a data scientist. Am hoping to learn more new skills to improve on my already existing skills.

Amazing course, amazing instructors and assignments. I really enjoyed working with Tableau.

You may experience some confusion for some assignments but don't worry! Just use the discussion boards :)

Not very practical but how to proceed and how to question yourself before you begin visualization has been explained in a best way

Pros: The explanations are clear. The instructors seem knowledgeable and the lectures are well organized. The are several quick questions embedded in the lectures, which is great to help you remain focused on what is being taught. Great for people without a tech background.

Cons: The course is really basic. If you have a technology background (fro example if you are a programmer) this course might seem too basic for you. I'm a commercial intelligence analyst and I could complete the course literally about 5 days working about one hour per day even though I had not used tableau before. I'm glad I didn't pay for this course myself (my employer did) as I think that the content-price ratio is not very good for someone with my profile. I'm still giving it 4 stars because the limited information shown in the course, is well taught.

Course material is great introduction, but the final assignment of week 4 involved posting on social media and request such as tinyURL in the grading criteria for peer review, which is a bit frustrating as it does not demonstrate student's ability to use Tableau. Many peers with no Twitter accounts need to create one solely for this assignment. Instructor however is nice and clear on the material. Greatly appreciate the course.

While the material was very good one of the assignments was very outdated and it was not clear how to proceed using the free version of Tableau nor what was required.

It did require more thinking and knowledge organisation than I am used to (being a stats person) but was a valuable introductory course nonetheless.

The screenshots and Tableau referred was an older version and thus a bit harder to follow.

Not a very useful course. The instructor didn't really cover that much of the detail of the tableau software and her instruction was not clear enough to walk you through some of the most important features of tableau such as filters applied on each individual worksheet which you should use in your final assignment. Speaking of the final assignment, the rubric doesn't focus on the quality of the viz but rather on weather you "tweeted" properly. After taking hours on the final assignment in order to make it as good as possible, that is how you evaluate my hard work!!? Overall, very disappointing on this course! If you are taking it for fun, it is certainly a good course for entertainment, but I don't recommend it for students who are looking for an effective way to enhance their knowledge on Tableau.

I found this to be a disappointing course. The Tableau parts have no real added value on top of what's available for free on Tableau's site.

Unfortunately I felt the course had too much "fluff" and not enough technical knowledge. For a course titled, "fundamental of Visualization with TABLEAU," I expected a lot more of Tableau to be covered. All you get from this course is how to connect to data sources. Disappointed.

The fact that the assignments are peer reviewed put you in a dead lock. You are at the mercy of "peers" that do not even check the answers you provide and are just plainly rude. Disappointing.

So, this course starts with a bang but 50% of the stuff was irrelevant, rather it would have been better if you just taught us Tableau and its usages instead of unwanted stuff. The course is too short literally and hardly covers anything useful. Govind blabbers just something which even he isn't sure of in the last Storyboarding lecture. Rest all were fine but seriously, you could have just taught us the whole Tableau interface. And I wonder what the use of the last assignment really is. I just rate it two because the instructors were good but the course content deserves nothing. Thanks and Cheers!

Dear Desiree', I actually didn't feel it's necessary to post this viz in Twitter because it's already available for viewing in Tableau platform, it's kind of overuse of online resource! I wish this strange exam pass conditions will get improved over time. As currently I realized it's a strict rule for this exam I will leave this course for now. My final request is to please remove these online post/comments stuff from this exam if possible. All the best -AG

The peer grading is awful. You are relying on others to thoroughly read and comprehend the criteria for the assignments and grade you fairly to be able to complete the course. There is also no easy way to dispute the grade or have an admin validate that the grade is deserved.

Great start to understanding Tableau! The honors work is great if you have computer literate people know how to grade the work. I did it twice and both time the reviewers said I didn't so something that I did do and the other time was because they could not see on twitter. Also the posting of a screenshot on the page, is very difficult and has no explanation how to do make it work (needs code language) and it made me 1 point shy on my second submission. Very disappointed with this "honors" part of the course. However the rest of the course was great, and helped me a lot.

This is an excellent program with lot of hands-on experience for people who are new to Tableau tool. This program starts from the very basic, so there is no need for prior experience in the tool. Happy after completing this program and it gives a immense pleasure to learn more on Tableau. Thanks for the instrutor to produce one of the best basic program for Tableau and also for Couresra.

I think this course delivers as advertised. It is a fundamentals course, and I left with sufficient skills and knowledge to navigate Tableau successfully, create engaging visualizations with data and begin connecting with the data visualization community online. If you're looking to become a Tableau expert, you'll need more than this course. But I think it's a great foundation.

I learnt many techniques and features in Tableau tool. Also, learned to create visualizations , graphs, creative dashboards and many more formatting skills. It helped to boost my confidence and made me gain very vast knowledge. I'm grateful for Coursera for introducing this course and to the instructor for teaching me this course.

This course was a great introduction to data visualization and using the Tableau software. I never knew data viz was so common! Going forward, I will use the knowledge I learned about Tableau in my data science job to work with and visualize data. I'm looking forward to exploring more of what I can do with Tableau!

It was one of the best courses I took on visualizations in recent time. The course content was high quality and was explained beautifully step by step. This is very important for someone who is just starting out to learn about Tableau and its various applications in data science.

Enrolling in Coursera program has bee be the most enjoyable, engaging and productive educational experience I've ever encountered. The courses pull you in and get you involved with the greater professional community very quickly. This is what MOOCs were meant to be!

It's an intro course, so don't expect to become a Tableau expert. You can expect to learn some bedrock principles of visualization and have some fun doing so. I enjoyed the course, and it made me hungry to learn more (and complete the entire specialization).

It is a very helpful course which enables leaners to capture the idea and get hands dirty very quickly. The instructions are easy to follow and more importantly, the it addressed the key for visualization that less is more, which is inspiring.
