Designed in collaboration with the University’s School of Mathematics, one of the largest mathematics research departments in the UK, this innovative curriculum combines foundational data science and specialist theoretical and practical statistics content. You’ll gain a data science master’s with a deeper mathematical understanding of statistical models that underpin modern data science.
If your degree classification doesn’t meet the standard entry requirements, then entering via the Performance Pathway could be a good fit. This innovative pathway for a University of Leeds online Masters degree allows learners to apply for MSc Data Science (Statistics) with either:
a minimum of a 3rd class (2.2 GPA) Bachelor of Science honours degree or Bachelor of Engineering honours degree or
3 years of relevant professional experience.

Graduates will receive a standard University of Leeds certificate. The certificate will be identical to those awarded for on-campus study, and won’t mention Coursera.
Data science and statistics are relevant and necessary to almost every industry. You’ll possess the ability to evaluate the quality of data and select suitable methods of data analysis to support effective decision making.
The MSc Data Science (Statistics) leads to a recognised UK degree qualification. This degree does not have any additional professional accreditation at this time.
The option to try a course before enrolling in the full degree is currently in development and will be available in the near future.
The duration of the programme is typically 2-4 years (certain conditions may apply), so you have the flexibility to manage your studies around your other commitments.
A time commitment of roughly 20 hours per week (plus some additional assessment preparation time over 7 weeks) is recommended for each course. This amounts to 150 hours across the length of the course., The programme which comprises 12 courses in total can be completed over a period of 24 months. ).
12 courses in total are required to complete the programme. However, if circumstances prevent you from completing all 12 courses, it may be possible to achieve a Postgraduate Certificate (certain conditions may apply).
Students can take one course at a time.
Yes, students will be invited to attend in-person on-campus ceremonies when they graduate. There will also be an online celebration option.
Unfortunately, it is not possible to switch between the online and on-campus programmes.
We currently don't have online office hours. If you have any questions, you’ll have the option to contact your tutors via email, who would respond asynchronously.
Once fully registered, you will have the same access to on-campus facilities as an on-campus student such as access to all library services and online facilities, including the University of Leeds Library's vast range of online resources such as journal articles, electronic books, databases, and search tools. Additionally, online materials are available 24/7 and enquiries will be responded to within 24 hours, Monday-Friday, 09.00-17.00 UK time.
As an online student, you’ll have the option to apply for a student ID card, but it is not a necessity.
You will be able to interact with fellow students via forums on Coursera and in live sessions. Additional professional networking opportunities can be found through the University of Leeds' Career Services Website.

The degree will be made up of 12 x 15-credit courses, each designed to be completed within an 8 week block(seven weeks of tuition plus one week of break). The programme is entirely online, and course content will be available on the Coursera platform, enabling you to work through each week’s content according to your own schedule. Learning activities will combine live webinar/tutorials with online content on the Coursera platform, discussion boards, and self-directed learning. This should take around 20 hours per week.
LIDA will be delivering the Project Skills module and supporting students through their Project module too.
