6 Highest-Paying Tech Jobs

As jobs in technological fields continue to grow, discover which of these roles have high salaries, as well as the education and training requirements of each job.

People working in technology are often at the cutting edge of new ideas, innovations, and expansion worldwide, particularly in the US. Companies like Apple, Google, Meta, and others are leading the way for technology jobs in the private sector. At the same time, local, state, and federal government agencies are adopting technology and creating a digital transformation in the public sector. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that many fastest-growing occupations are in technology-related fields [1].

According to the BLS, jobs in information technology and computing will grow much faster than the national average by 2032. These jobs typically have high pay, with a current median annual wage of $104,420. That’s more than twice all occupations' $48,060 median annual wage [2].

What is a tech job?

Technology jobs typically focus on fields related to STEM: science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Depending on what each position requires, you may use computers or other technological equipment to work in an office or do fieldwork. Some tech companies offer work-from-home or hybrid workplace policies.

1. Computer research scientist

Requirements: A master’s degree in computer science or a related field 

Computer research scientists explore ways technology can solve problems. You may work with engineers and others in the technology field to develop ideas that address real world issues or analyze the results of others’ work. You may also develop new software systems or tools to change how people interact with computers. Additionally, employers may require you to write up your results or present your findings to others once you complete parts of a project or an entire project.

Computer research scientist positions are quite specialized and usually require at least a master’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, or a related field. However, some organizations, such as the federal government, may hire you with a bachelor’s degree. It may also be helpful to have a background in a specialized field, such as biology, depending on the field you want to work in.

2. Computer network architect

Requirements: A bachelor’s degree in computer and information technology, engineering, or a similar field 

Computer network architects develop communications networks for data to travel, such as a local area network (LAN) or wide area network (WAN). You may be responsible for planning and laying out networks, understanding information security when designing networks, upgrading hardware, and researching new ideas. To stay competitive, be aware of changes and updates in the field.

Computer network architects typically begin with a bachelor’s degree in computer or information technology, engineering, or another related field. Previous experience working in information technology or gaining other professional experience may help you stand out to employers. Licensing and certification aren’t typically required, but earning vendor-specific certification for different software or other products may be helpful.

3. Database administrator

Requirements: A bachelor’s degree in computer or information technology or a related field 

A database administrator is responsible for creating and organizing the systems used to store and secure data. You’re responsible for building databases as well as ensuring they’re running properly without errors. You may have to test and maintain databases or update them as needed in addition to backing up and restoring data to prevent any losses in the system.

A database administrator typically needs a bachelor’s degree in information technology or a similar field, such as engineering or business. To enhance your skills, cultivate an understanding of database languages, including structured query language (SQL). Some employers may prefer you to have certification in specific software through software companies or vendors to ensure proficiency and understanding of certain products.

4. Information security analyst

Requirements: A bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field 

An information security analyst plans and executes security measures for a company or organization’s computer networks. You may monitor networks for security breaches, check system vulnerabilities, or research new security trends and methods. You may also develop security standards for your company or organization to ensure that computer systems remain secure.

Employers typically require a bachelor’s degree in information technology to advance as an information security analyst. A degree in a related field, such as engineering or math, may also help you get a security analyst position. Certifications such as CompTIA’s Security+ or the Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) may be beneficial depending on the requirements for a particular job.

5. Software developer

Requirements: A bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field; some employers may require a master’s degree in computer science or a related field 

A software developer creates programs or applications that computers use. You may work for a software development company with a team of developers, creating a product for different types of consumers. Software developers design the beginnings of a program or recommend upgrades or changes in the program. You may be responsible for making sure a current program continues to run as intended and addressing any issues or bugs that need fixing to restore correct operations.

Software developers typically need a bachelor’s degree in computer technology. You may also qualify for a position with a degree in a related field like engineering or mathematics. An internship or other professional experience may help you to get a software developer position. You may also gain proficiency in writing computer code.

6. Web developer

Job outlook (projected growth from 2022 to 2032): 8 percent [8]

Requirements: At least a high school diploma; some employers require a bachelor’s degree in a computer science-related field 

A web developer creates and maintains websites. Web developers meet with clients to get an idea of their vision for what they want from a website you design for them. You may be responsible for writing code for a website or testing it to ensure it works properly. You design graphics or work with a graphics team to create images and other illustrated pieces for a website. You may work for a digital design company specializing in website development or on your own with clients.

A  bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field may help you stand out to employers. You may not need a degree if you plan to be self-employed, but clients could ask for your credentials. You should understand computer languages used for website development, such as HTML. It’s also beneficial to gain knowledge of other languages like Javascript or different types of multimedia publishing programs.
