  • Review Claude Code's work: Claude Code can investigate problems, propose changes, and verify its own work, but you remain responsible for reviewing what it produces and deciding whether to apply its recommendations.

  • Expect long conversations to lose detail: Claude Code automatically compacts the conversation by replacing it with a structured summary. Some information reloads automatically, but other contexts (such as path-scoped rules and nested CLAUDE.md files) don't reload until Claude reads the relevant files again. If you need instructions to persist across sessions and compaction, store them in the project-root CLAUDE.md.

  • Balance capability, speed, and cost: More capable Claude models generally handle complex, multi-step development tasks more reliably, but they also tend to respond more slowly and cost more than smaller models.

  • Understand what checkpoints can and can't recover: Claude Code creates a checkpoint before it edits a file, making it easy to rewind file changes. However, checkpoints don't reverse actions with external side effects, such as database updates, API calls, or deployments.

Can beginners use Claude Code?
