Akito Murayama

Professor, Ph.D. in Urban Engineering

Bio

Dr. Murayama is the Head of Urban Land Use Planning Unit at Department of Urban Engineering and is also a member of UTokyo Center for Climate Solutions. As an expert on urban land use planning and urban development, he is currently conducting several research projects on planning methodology for climate change mitigation and adaptation. Co-authored books in English include "Living Cities in Japan: Citizens' Movements, Machizukuri and Local Environments" (Routledge, 2007), "Innovations in Collaborative Urban Regeneration" (Springer, 2009), "Urban Resilience - A Transformative Approach" (Springer, 2016), "Urban Systems Design: Creating Sustainable Smart Cities in the Internet of Things Era" (Elsevier, 2020). He teaches land use planning and district planning/design for undergraduate students, advanced urban planning and global planning for graduate students, and urban planning/design studios for both undergraduate and graduate students. He also participates in many urban planning and environmental planning practices at local and prefectural government levels.
