Because Shopify and Square are technically competitors in the point-of-sale (POS) market, a native way to create Shopify Square integration is unavailable. However, due to the differences between Shopify and Square’s offerings, some people find it valuable to integrate Square with Shopify through a third-party app as an option for taking payments.

In this tutorial, you’ll learn how to integrate Shopify and Square so your customers can use Square to make payments when shopping in your Shopify store.

How to integrate Shopify and Square

Here’s a quick summary of the steps you’ll need to take to successfully integrate Shopify and Square:

  1. Choose which third-party app you want to use for integration.

  2. Follow your chosen app’s instructions to integrate.

Let’s go over these steps in more detail.

1. Choose which third-party app you want to use for integration.

Since there’s no native way to integrate Square with Shopify, you’ll need to choose a third-party app designed to integrate the two. We’ll outline the specific steps for four options, including:

  • Zapier: A paid automation platform that allows you to set up tasks for integration.

  • Webinopoly: A certified Shopify partner that offers the Checkout Republic app for integration.

  • SKU IQ: An app that syncs data between Square and Shopify.

  • Integrate.io: A plugin similar to Zapier.

Each of these apps offers different benefits, so it’s worth looking into your shop’s specific needs before choosing one to use for integration.

2. Follow your chosen app’s instructions to integrate.

Once you’ve chosen your third-party integration app, it’s time to integrate. Let’s go over the different steps for each app in more detail:

Zapier

Once you’ve created a Zapier account and chosen your plan, you’ll need to authenticate both Shopify and Square. Then, select one of the apps as a trigger and choose how the other app will react to the trigger. Finally, select the data you want to transfer between the apps, like customer names, order details, or payment information.

Webinopoly

Webinopoly outsources the integration of Square and Shopify for a one-time fee and a monthly usage fee. To use Webinopoly, visit Checkout Republic’s website and fill out the signup form with your Shopify username, password, and URL. Once you pay for the service, Webinopoly will handle the entire integration and management processes for the two apps.

SKU IQ

SKU IQ allows you to manage your Square and Shopify data in one dashboard. It does this by syncing the apps together. First, you must sign up for a SKU IQ account and choose the best plan for your business. Then, authenticate the Square and Shopify apps. Add what data you’d like to have exchanged between the two apps. Finally, you will sync SKU IQ to set up the integration.

Integrate.io

Sign up for an Integrate.io account (formerly Xplenty). Similar to Zapier, you’ll authenticate the two apps within Integrate.io. Select one app as the trigger, then select which action you’d like the other app to take. Finally, choose which data you want shared between the apps.
