According to Glassdoor, the estimated total pay for an algorithm developer in the US is $197,092 per year. This figure includes an average base salary of $120,439 and $76,653 in additional pay. Additional pay may represent profit-sharing, commissions, or bonuses [3].

How to become an algorithm developer

To become an algorithm developer, you'll need a combination of relevant education, such as a bachelor’s degree, applicable skills obtained through work experience, and personal projects to build a portfolio. Learning about topics like predictive modeling and machine learning is also a good idea. 

Education and training

To work as an algorithm developer, the basic educational requirement is a bachelor’s degree in computer science, mathematics, programming, or similar. While earning a degree, you may want to focus on coursework covering algorithms, data structures, and computer programming. You may decide to add a master’s degree to your resume to increase your chances of landing a position further.

To bolster your resume, you may also find online courses, boot camps, and certifications available, as well as taking part in open source projects. With some relevant experience and a portfolio, you may enjoy a diverse career path as an algorithm developer with companies like Microsoft, Amazon, and Google. Opportunities exist in companies that gather or work with data and those that run computer programs.

You may start out in a role such as software engineer, data scientist, or as an intern and specialize, moving into algorithms. You won’t find a set pathway, as it really is a case of building transferable skills and diverging, or stepping across, rather than an obvious progression. With experience, you can move into roles such as a research assistant, lead machine learning engineer, or machine learning engineer manager. 

Future trends regarding the development of algorithms tend to revolve around figuring out how AI programs can use a set amount of computing resources to do even more computations. Algorithm development is a vital part of AI technology because more advanced algorithms mean the AI model can discover solutions to problems faster. This results in more efficiency in performance and less computing per problem. 

According to a 2024 study, the amount of computation to solve a problem using AI has halved in the last eight months because of advances in algorithms [4]. This significant development demonstrates the advances being made in the field. 

Algorithms allow businesses to predict what customers want and what they are going to do next. For example, Netflix may make recommendations specific to customers based on what they have watched before. Not only this, but an algorithm can continually improve its performance by learning from its previous attempts.
